When Hollywood Came to Utah

Location filming was quite the effort for Golden Age films but spoke to the power of filmmaking as a form of storytelling that could be quite creative in using various geographic areas to its advantage. Rather than filming within the confines of a studio, location filming allowed for a more natural and realistic setting for many a film, with some locations being portrayed as they were or substituting for other locales.

When Hollywood Came to Utah by James V. D’Arc is a stunning homage to location filming in Utah, brimming with beautiful photographs and a fascinating narrative. This special centennial edition is divided into periods and regions, ranging from classic to contemporary films. From Tom Mix to Kevin Costner, many interesting films are depicted throughout, as are stories about the successes and challenges of filming on location.

When Hollywood Came to Utah is available for purchase via Gibbs Smith.
