Zeppo

When people reflect upon the Marx Brothers, typically the image of a core group of three comes to mind: Groucho, Harpo, and Chico. While much has been written and examined concerning their lives and careers, it is Zeppo Marx who finally stands in the spotlight in Robert S. Bader’s Zeppo: The Reluctant Marx Brother.

Bader’s book is exceptionally well-written and fascinating, shedding light on this often overlooked Marx Brother. Here, readers gain a stronger understanding of Zeppo apart from the three, particularly during his time in Chicago while his brothers (including Gummo) were performing regularly in vaudeville. Professionally, Bader also covers Zeppo’s collaborations with his brothers as well as his solo endeavors.

Throughout this book, Bader offers a highly entertaining and well-researched narrative. This was clearly a passion project for him, and his enthusiasm for both his main subject and all things Marx is evident.

This book is not to be missed!
