David Tomlinson is best known for his portrayal of Mr. Banks in Mary Poppins (1964), though his filmography extended far beyond that beloved role. Thankfully, Tomlinson himself reflected upon his life and career in Luckier Than Most: An Autobiography.
In this book, Tomlinson takes readers through his early years in the Royal Air Force, working as a pilot and instructor. In the years to come, he would appear in over fifty films, including the likes of Miranda (1948), The Love Bug (1968), Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), and more. He also took to the stage in several hit plays, which are also detailed in this book.
Beyond his professional achievements, Tomlinson also offers readers a look into his personal life, highlighting his marriage to Audrey Freeman and their four children. This book also includes a tribute by his son, James, and an afterword by actor Miles Jupp and writer James Kettle, who dramatized Tomlinson’s life in the stage production The Life I Lead.
This new iteration of Tomlinson’s autobiography features an introduction by writer Craig Brown. This book is not to be missed by fans of Tomlinson or those looking to learn more about his life and career.
