Ready for My Close-Up

Sunset Boulevard (1950) is a brilliant American dark comedy film noir that has withstood the test of time. In particular, Gloria Swanson shines in this macabre film in her haunting portrayal of Norma Desmond–a former film star whom the filmmaking industry has forgotten.

David M. Lubin’s Ready for My Close-Up focuses on the making of the classic film, in addition to stories behind its conception, production, and reception. Lubin discusses analyses of the film’s plot and structure, the casting process–including finding the perfect Norma, and the legacy of this beloved classic. Not only does Lubin succeed in exploring the major talents associated with this production, both in front of the camera and behind it, but he also leaves no stone unturned in terms of addressing and crediting the work of the many other individuals behind this project.

I highly recommend Lubin’s book to fans of film noir and Billy Wilder.
