The Hollywood History of Art

Films have allowed viewers to explore a broad array of stories, from ones rooted in reality to fictitious works. In the case of The Hollywood History of Art, Christopher Frayling examines Hollywood’s depictions of artists through films.

Many films have been biographical in nature, though they often take creative liberties with the stories being told. Artists have been portrayed in biopics from the days of Golden Age cinema to contemporary output.

Frayling thoughtfully explores these portrayals and considers the successes and limits of these films. In addition, he discusses the assumptions these films make as well as the contexts in which they were created. The narrative is supplemented by numerous photographs, plus film poster and marketing illustrations. It further addresses how films have gone on to shape some of the legacies of the artists portrayed in them.

Fans of art and biopics are sure to enjoy this book.
