Peerless

Version 1.0.0

Rouben Mamoulian was a notable figure in film and theatre, having the distinction of directing the original stage productions of Porgy and Bess, Carousel, and Oklahoma! In addition, he also directed the films Love Me Tonight (1932), Queen Christina (1933), Silk Stockings (1957), and more. Uncompromising in his vision and output as a director, he frequently exhibited both genius and stubbornness as a professional.

Kurt Jensen’s Peerless: Rouben Mamoulian, Hollywood, and Broadway takes on the challenge of navigating the flops and successes of Mamoulian’s career. Jensen discusses Mamoulian in a professional and personal sense in addition to drawing upon intriguing source material to tell this story. Jensen consulted with Mamoulian’s unfinished memoir, diaries, interviews, and a wide variety of other resources to effectively portray Mamoulian.
