The African Gaze

Amy Sall’s The African Gaze: Photography, Cinema, and Power offers an examination of postcolonial and contemporary photography and cinema from Africa. In addition to its critical introduction to African still and moving images, this book celebrates major names in African photography. Additionally, African cinema pioneers including the likes of Ousmane Sembène are also showcased in detail.

Sall utilizes archival images and documents to realize this work, in addition to incorporating a broad range of interviews in an effort to contribute thoughtful conversation surrounding greater topics of identity, colonial history, autonomy, and liberation politics. This beautifully illustrated book is a must for fans of international cinema.
