Monster Movies of Universal Studios

While October is my favorite time of year to revisit classic horror films, they can most certainly be enjoyed all year long. Among the most iconic films are the classic monster movies to emerge from Universal Studios. The release of Dracula (1931) and its success initiated a variety of other monster portrayals and sequels. As a result, Universal enjoyed being the leading producer of horror films for over twenty years.

In Monster Movies of Universal Studios, James L. Neibaur discusses the many iconic monster movie releases produced at Universal during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Neibaur explores the production of these films and examines their successes, challenges, reception, and legacies today. The book is supplemented with numerous still photographs and movie posters, showcasing key scenes in the films as well as studying how these films were marketed.

This well-researched book is sure to be enjoyed by fans of classic horror films and offers a fine foundational overview of the significance of Universal’s output.

Monster Movies of Universal Studios is available for purchase via Rowman & Littlefield.
